The four cardinal points—the directions north, south, east and west—have undoubted cultural influence. On a rudimentary level, the directional system is composed of two intersecting axes; two sets of extremes. Using our proprietary geometry QuaDror as its basis, Foundation of Culture contrasts these axes by placing them directly across from one another in physical form.
On the right, we view the North-South axis. A gradient of hot to cold, symmetrical concrete QuaDror blocks become increasingly sharp and angular as they rise towards the sky. The opposing wall represents the cultural shift present along the horizontal line: hard-angled squares transition into softer, round shapes, a conclusion consequentially reminiscent of yin and yang. The form, however, was not chosen by coincidence: its philosophical message that seemingly opposite or contrary forces are in fact complementary and interconnected reflects the sentiment of the piece.
