Drought is an earthly installation that highlights the connection between our physical world and our economic world. It was conceived from my ongoing desire to reintegrate the presence of nature—in all its captivating forms—into our manufactured environments, and rumination on the relationship between climate and commerce.
The piece's cracked surface—made of white Paonazzo marble, a prized stone typically associated with refined taste and luxurious settings—mimics that of a drought-stricken landscape. The manufactured environment is contrasted by nature. Exuberance is contrasted by thirst. Prosperity is contrasted by need.
Seeking not to serve as a form of condemnation, but rather a portent of what could be, it urges us to pursue sustainability over indulgence and immediate reward; to protect and replenish our one and only precious Earth.
